Minnesota Fringe Festival

July 31 - Aug. 10

25 shows Audio Described (AD), 16 shows ASL-interpreted; All performances are accessible to people with mobility impairments.

The 15th annual Minnesota Fringe Festival will feature 156 companies giving over 800 theatre, dance, performance art, storytelling and other theatrical performances at 18 Minneapolis venues.  
Shows generally last under one hour, with a new show starting every 90 minutes. At Bryant Lake Bowl shows last 75 minutes and perform at two-hour intervals.

All patrons are encouraged to refrain from using scented perfumes, detergents, hair products, etc. prior to attending shows to accommodate patrons and artists with chemical sensitivities.

The Fringe Festival printed schedule, see the July 30th edition of City Pages, will include complete schedules, show summaries, bus schedules, a venue map and ticket buying information. Tix: Attend one show for $12; get a five-show punch pass for $50; a ten-show punch pass for $90; an Ultra Pass for unlimited shows for $150. Advance reservations ($2.50 fee) guarantee your seat. However, people using access services can make FREE reservations by using the code “access” over the phone or online. A $3 Fringe button is required of all attendees. Thurs. July 31, 7:00 pm – “The Attack of the Big Angry Booty” (Traveling Kurkendaal Productions) – Have you ever been on a diet? If you have, then you know that dieting isn't easy. Whether it's 5 pounds or 50 pounds the weight loss journey can be a challenging one.  Come experience the diet rollercoaster at Interact Center for the Performing Arts – 212 - 3rd Ave. N.

Thurs. July 31, 8:30 pm – “Ophelia” (Studio Zero) – An investigation into the hidden love story within Shakespeare's greatest tragedy, this piece explores a familiar story from a new perspective in a new work from this talented, young company at Interact Center for the Performing Arts – 212 3rd Ave. N.

Sat. Aug. 2, 1:00 pm – PieRats: The Crusade for Peaches Cobbler” (People Sittin’ Around Doin’ Theatre) – A pie maker's swashbuckling, slapstick adventure with Captain Schleptoba and Clueless Willie, who help save his love Peaches Cobbler from the villainous paws of Blind Bart and evil pocket dog Jolly Rodger-Rita at Mixed Blood Theatre – 1501 S. 4th St.

Sat. Aug. 2, 2:30 pm – “Get It OFF YOUR CHEST!” (Mary Helena) – Meet entertaining and engaging women who challenge us to view ourselves in our many guises. These women will make you laugh and cry, think and act(?). It's their time to download! Time to get it off their chests at Mixed Blood Theatre – 1501 S. 4th St.

Sat. Aug. 2, 5:30 pm – “59 Minutes ‘Til the End” (Steve Anderson) – A 49-minute show that knows we all die a little every day. Laugh, cry and sing (optional, very optional) to the stories and songs of one man's deaths and rebirths. It's the feel-good funeral of Aug. at Mixed Blood Theatre – 1501 S. 4th St.

Sat. Aug. 2, 7:00 pm – “Going South” (Commedia dell’farte) – Tom's strapped for cash and months behind in rent. With time running out, he is on the brink of being evicted. Afraid of his landlord and the outside world, he and his roommate need to make some money... fast! at Mixed Blood Theatre – 1501 S. 4th St.

Sat. Aug. 2, 10:00 pm– “Dipped in Love” (Mu Performing Arts) – Three women from diverse backgrounds share stories of friendship, loss and discovery in choosing to “walk the edge of the sword” rather than accepting the status quo at Mixed Blood Theatre – 1501 S. 4th St.

Sun. Aug. 3, 4:00 pm – “The Virginity of Astronauts” (The Electric Telescope Theatre Co.) – A persistent knock on a spaceship's door near Mars... who's there? Two astronauts face a powerful being's plan to control the universe in this science-fiction adaptation of Euripides’ play “Ion.” at Intermedia Arts – 2822 Lyndale Ave. S.

Sun. Aug. 3, 5:30 pm – “If a Tree Falls” (Cloudless Day) –...is that the end of walks in the woods? Philosophy? Ecosystems? Two women provide irreverent yet poignant accounts of transitions, personal and environmental, as they reinvent concepts of self and forest at Intermedia Arts – 2822 Lyndale Ave. S.

Sun. Aug. 3, 7:00 pm – “Among the Oats” (Jared Reise) – Three guys wake up and find themselves inside a can of oatmeal at Intermedia Arts – 2822 Lyndale Ave. S.

Mon. Aug. 4, 5:30 pm – “2008 Republican National Convention” (Bedlam Theatre) – Anarchists!  Aliens!  Hillary Clinton!  Everyone is trying to crash the 2008 RNC.  Our own YXY news team keeps you up to the minute on the news that hasn't happened yet at University of MN Rarig Center (Thrust) – 330 S. 21st Ave.

Mon. Aug. 4, 7:00 pm – “A Dash of Poe” (Mercury Ninety Productions) – The genius of Edgar Allan Poe, the original American poet, master of horror, and mystery writer, as you have never seen displayed on stage before. "the tell-tale heart," "the purloined letter," "the bells." at University of MN Rarig Center (Arena) – 330 S. 21st Ave.

Mon. Aug. 4, 8:30 pm – “How Does a Drug Deal Become a Decent 3rd Date?” (Green with Envy Productions) – Meet a girl who keeps meeting the wrong guy -- until she figures out that dating isn't about perfecting the art of what doesn't work -- it's about figuring out what does at University of MN Rarig Center (Thrust) – 330 S. 21st Ave.

Mon. Aug. 4, 10:00 pm – “Antigone…A Riff on Sophocles” (Metropolitan State University's Theater Underground) – No droning Greek choruses draped in bed sheets! Forget the stately columns and enter a world of rap music and rebellion! A tale of intransigent leaders and the need to resist them, no matter the cost at University of MN Rarig Center (Arena) – 330 S. 21st Ave.

Wed. Aug. 6, 8:30 pm – “My War” (Klatch Productions) – World War II. True story. Bombing raids and B-24s. Rationing and shortages. Dancing and doughnuts. Through letters and diaries, a boomer discovers two remarkable women -- her mother and grandmother. Step back in time at Theatre de la Jeune Lune – 105 N. 1st St.

Wed. Aug. 6, 10:00 pm – “The Gypsy and the General” (3 Sticks) – Defeated by the enemy, the General and her entourage traverse fantastical lands as the Gypsy spins their fortunes through electrifying music in this physically daring ensemble-created show at Theatre de la Jeune Lune – 105 N. 1st St.

Thurs. Aug. 7, 5:30 pm – “Medusa’s Riddle – Fresh Off the Boat” (Asian Media Access) – AMA once again presents the popular 2007 Fringe show, “Medusa's Riddle.” Laughter, mysteries, street anger, the bamboo ceiling, where they have in common, that's the riddle for you to solve at Ritz Theater – 345 13th Ave. NE.

Thurs. Aug. 7, 7:00 pm – “Catfight!” (John Ervin) – Dedicated to Michele Bachmann, Ted Haggard and Larry Craig: two rival teams of documentary filmmakers, following two opposing Congressional campaigns, affect the election thanks to one swingin' higher power! at Ritz Theater – 345 13th Ave. NE.

Sat. Aug. 9, 2:00 pm – “Brilliant Traces” (TMJ Productions and Theatre Unbound) – The wilds of Alaska. Fate, a runaway bride and a cynical recluse converge in a match of wills to echo the raging blizzard outside. A kooky exploration of love, loss and the unlikely places we find sanctuary at Bryant Lake Bowl – 810 Lake St. W.

Sat. Aug. 9, 4:00 pm – “i love you, elephant shoes, and olive juice; (mis) communication in a modern world” (20% Theatre Company, Twin Cities) – An original object/puppet symphony that follows the journey of muddled messages, tin can voicemails, cursive font emails, and cigar box guitars. A vintage listening play complete with handwritten subtitles at Bryant Lake Bowl – 810 Lake St. W.

Sat. Aug. 9, 6:00 pm – “Fool for a Client” (Mark Whitney) – Best Solo D.C. and Iowa Fringe! Facing 225 years in prison, a comedian represents himself. An award-winning political dramedy. Sat. Aug. 9, 8:00 pm – “Red Tide” (The Promethean Theatre) – An intense psychological thriller examining the relationship between two brothers and the woman that comes between them. Tight 3-person noir theatre piece at Bryant Lake Bowl – 810 Lake St. W.

Sun. Aug. 10, 4:00 pm – “BULL: An American Story of Bullheadedness” (Chain Coffee Productions) – Main Street School of Performing Arts and Jon Ferguson created this original adaptation of Ionesco's absurdist classic “Rhinoceros,” in which a community of American citizens turn into Texas Longhorn Bulls at Minneapolis Theatre Garage – 711 Franklin Ave. W.

Sun. Aug. 10, 5:30 pm – “Department of Angels” (Schave and Reilly) – The Dept. summons all angels to work. Please punch in, sign out armor, put on halos, and report to your cloud. Tues. Aug. 5, 8:30 pm – “Great American Horror Movie Musical” (LSD Productions) – A criminal is at large; seven brave filmmakers promise to hunt him down. Armed only with a camera, this kooky bunch sing and dance their way to making the greatest horror movie ever made – 80's Karaoke Style! at Lab Theater – 700 1st St. N.

Tues. Aug. 5, 10:00 pm – “Boys Don't Make Passes at Girls Who Wear Glasses” (True Enough Theater) – Embrace your inner dork as Laura and Curt (the geeks behind “Take a Left at the Giant Cow”) fog up your glasses with torrid tales of nerd romance. Did we say torrid? We meant awkward, embarrassing and unrequited at University of MN Rarig Center (Arena) – 330 S. 21st Ave.

Aug. 7, 5:30 pm – “Writers of the Purple Sage” (Writers of the Purple Sage) – Retired travel editor, Catherine Watson, and retired uncle, Al Sicherman, read some of their favorite pieces from the Star Tribune and perhaps illustrate why they aren't still married at Playwrights’ Center – 2301 Franklin Ave. E.

Thurs. Aug. 7, 8:30 pm – “Waking in Minneapolis” (Chris Knutson) – A man awakes to find his life has fallen apart and his bike is missing. He attends the “wrong” wake and has a “life changing” day with the unique characters he encounters at Mixed Blood Theatre – 1501 S. 4th St.

Thurs. Aug. 7, 10:00 pm – “The Visitor, or From Here to Angina” (Minnesota Shakespeare Company) – Lovely woman visited by suitor from neighboring farm. They talk of land and money, while their longing for each other fulminates into angina and rage. Accompanied by a live band at Bryant Lake Bowl – 810 Lake St. W.

Fri. Aug. 8, 5:30 pm – “An Inconvenient Squirrel” (Joseph Scrimshaw Productions) – The lost village of the squirrel-people is thrown into chaos when a young squirrel refuses to choose a name! A live action cartoon packed with chattering, scampering and existential identity crisis! at University of MN Rarig Center (Thrust) – 330 S. 21st Ave.

Fri. Aug. 8, 7:00 pm – “American Sexy” (New Theatre Group) – From the company that created the Fringe hits “How To Cheat” and “Killer Smile” comes a new play about how the online world is changing our definitions of relationships in the flesh at University of MN Rarig Center (Arena) – 330 S. 21st Ave.
