What is a Waiver?

Listen to a group of panelists as they discuss the benefits of using one of Minnesota’s “waiver” programs, which assist people who are disabled or elderly to manage their care plan and hire, train and supervise their own staff. The panel will talk about the number of waiver programs available, what has worked well for them and what they would do differently.

Special Needs Adoption Information

February 13, 2007

In Minnesota, 600 children are waiting for an adoptive family. Lutheran Social Service is holding an information meeting about special needs adoption, which focuses on older children who are under state guardianship due to abuse or neglect, and need loving families. These children are usually six years or older, and may have emotional, behavioral, physical or mental challenges. Families pay no fees for this program.

Changing Attitudes: 1962-2007

The Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities invites you to a presentation comparing survey results from 1962 and today. Self-advocates and representatives of The Arc of Minnesota, United Cerebral Palsy of Minnesota, and The Autism Society of Minnesota will respond to the report.

Japanese Drumming

“Arts Access at Hennepin County Library,” a performance series designed to connect teens and adults of all mental and physical abilities to the arts, presents Mu Performing Arts. The thunderous sounds of immense taiko drums protected harvests from pests and evil spirits in ancient Japan. The award-winning Asian-American theater company, under the artistic direction of Rick Shiomi, communicates the traditions and history of Asian cultures in stunning, high volume and highly-acclaimed percussion performances.

Mike’s Big Brain Bash 3.0

Author and brain injury survivor Mike Strand is hosting a charity event called “Mike’s Big Brain Bash 3.0” to support the Brain Injury Association of Minnesota. This is its third year, and the event will again have a silent auction and St. Croix Valley favorite, “Voice of Reason” playing their mix of covers and classic rock.

Disabled Veterans Turkey Hunt

April 24 - 26, 2007

The St. Cloud Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Minnesota DNR and Minnesota National Guard, Camp Ripley, will conduct the Third Annual Physically Disabled Vet-erans Turkey Hunt at Camp Ripley in Little Falls. This special hunt is provided for physically disabled veterans who are currently receiving outpatient treatment at a VA Medical Center, or physically disabled veterans who are eligible for care and cannot hunt during the regular firearms season.
