Artful Lives Exhibit

September 7 – November 24, 2006

“Artful Lives,” an exhibit of artwork created by individuals with developmental disabilities, will be on display through November 24, 2006 at the Humphrey Forum, 301 19th Ave. S., Minneapolis. Hennepin County District 4
Candidate Forum

September 15, 2006

Residents of Hennepin County District 4 are invited to meet candidates Farheen Hakeem, Peter McLaughlin and Jan Nye on Friday, September 15, from 6:00– 7:30 p.m. at the Brian Coyle Center, 420 15th Avenue South, Minneapolis. District 4 includes most of downtown Minneapolis, the University of Minnesota, Fort Snelling and the airport. It also contains some or all of nearly 40 Minneapolis neighborhoods.

Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers

Interfaith Inclusion Network

Many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities would like to be more active in their faith community, but physical and social barriers get in the way. Come to share ideas with others and learn how to expand your congregation’s outreach. Lifetime Assistance Planning Workshop

September 20, 2006

Arc’s new Lifetime Assistance Program helps families combine long-term legal and financial planning with personalized support to achieve lifelong quality of life for their loved one. Workshop topics include: Special Needs Trusts, maintaining government benefits and developing personal plans for your family member’s future. Walk for Wheels

September 23, 2006

Join Kaposia on Saturday, September 23rd at Como Park for its first annual “Walk for Wheels” and help raise money for the purchase of a wheelchair-accessible van. Kaposia is a nonprofit whose mission is to advance the inclusion of people with disabilities and other challenges in working and participating in their communities. Deaf Awareness Pledge Walk

September 24, 2006

Help support Minnesota DeafBlind Association (MBDA) and Global Deaf Connection (GDC) by joining the pledge walk or sponsoring a walker. MDBA provides educational workshops to empower DeafBlind people as a diverse cultural community. GDC sets up schools for Deaf children in developing countries. Both are nonprofits.

Rep. Keith Ellison to Host 'Rx for Health Care' Forum

Rep. Keith Ellison will host a community town hall forum Thursday, Oct. 5, in Crystal to discuss America's ailing health care system. The forum is slated for 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Community Room of Crystal City Hall, 4141 Douglas Dr. N. Artability 2006

October 5 - 7, 2006

Put on your glad rags, grab a friend or two, and head out to People Incorporated’s Art-ability at APOLLO—our annual event celebrating the use of creativity in the daily struggles of mental illness. Paintings, drawing, sculpture, photography and writing—some 350 entries from over 90 artists. Opening reception: 7 p.m. Thursday, October 5.

Parents, Spouses as Paid Caregivers - Info Sessions

October 16, November 8, December 4, 2006

These free information sessions for parents or spouses of a person with a disability explain Consumer Directed Community Supports (CDCS), which allow parent and spouses to be paid to provide care. The two-hour sessions are sponsored by Hennepin County Human Services and Public Health Department.

Spinal Cord Injury Workshop

October 21, 2006

North Memorial Rehabilitation Services is sponsoring a one-day workshop for persons with spinal cord injuries, their families and interested professionals. Topics include: Living and Aging With a Spinal Cord Injury; Wheelchair and Cushion Selection; Common Upper Extremity Injuries and Care. Darcy Pohland, Channel 4 reporter and consumer, will discuss her life before, during and following her injury.
