Hmong Health Educator

Report to: Health Access Manager. Status: Regular, Full-time, Non-exempt, 32 hours/week. Position Summary: Coordinates Hmong-focused replication of Plain Talk process including community mapping, health education and coordinated community response to teen pregnancy. Recruits, trains and works closely with community peer health educators.

Responsibilities:

• Recruit and train surveyors to carry out community mapping activities within the community, and ensure quality data collection to get valid results.

• Coordinate Plain Talk Community Core Group through outreach to and coordination with partner organizations.

• Recruit and train community peer health educators (Walkers & Talkers) to disseminate community mapping results and hold focus groups to shape key messages.

• Use key messages to shape Plain Talk curriculum to meet community needs.

• Work with and train community peer health educators in community outreach, program goals, key messages and all aspects of reproductive health education in order to carry out Home Health Parties with community adult residents.

• Coordinate youth involvement in Plain Talk.

• Conduct program evaluation, report results and make necessary program modifications.

• Maintains a referral network, data base documentation, and submits written and financial reports to funding sources.

• Participate in staff and agency meetings, agency training and pertinent conferences and workshops.

• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology or a health or social services related field is required.

• Experience working with the Hmong community, facilitating groups and working collaboratively with social service and health agencies.

• Bilingual fluency in spoken English and Hmong, required, ability to read and write Hmong preferred.

• A familiarity with prevention of HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted infection, and unwanted pregnancy required.

• Previous supervisory experience preferred.

• Demonstrated skills in communicating effectively with people of various racial, ethnic and social backgrounds.

• Knowledge of database and other computer skills and the ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form.

• Ability to monitor budgets.

• Experience in evaluation design and implementation highly desirable.

• May require minimal travel.

Youth Program Worker

Full–Time Exempt Entry Level, M-F: Evening & Some Weekend Hours. $27,000-30,000 + Benefits. American Indian Family Center Mission: Strengthen and value the capacity of the community, its cultures, and families to raise healthy, nurtured children to achieve their full potential and to be active, contributing members in their community.

Position Description: The Youth Program Worker will work with the Youth Program Manager to implement activities for Indian youth and families. The Youth Worker will be responsible for youth programming, including implementing curriculum directed toward healthy lifestyles, leadership development and direct service. Duties include outreach, recruitment, building relationships, providing education presentations to community and schools.

Duties include: ENABL (Educate Now and Babies Later) Program

• Outreach to American Indian youth, including street outreach and providing information at schools, events, and other American Indian programs.

• Deliver ENABL curriculum as well as culturally specific lessons plans to American Indian youth primarily between the ages of 12 – 15 in various types of settings including schools and community settings.

• Deliver ENABLE curriculum as well as culturally specific lessons plans to parents of American Indian youth participating in youth curriculum.

• Develop and implement a community wide awareness campaign to inform the community of accurate information pertaining to sexual development and preventing teen pregnancy.
GirlsBEST Program

• Co-facilitate group meetings to support opportunities.

• Develop and deliver lessons plans to improve the readiness skills of American Indian girls to become economically self-sufficient.

Medicine Wheel Collaborative

• Provide support to youth/parent group meetings and activities.

Qualifications

• High School diploma required. AA degree preferred.

• 2+ years experience working with American Indian youth

• 2+ years experience working with American Indian culture and values

• Youth and family advocacy work

• Knowledge of, and experience working in, St. Paul’s American Indian Community

• Basic computer skills in Microsoft office

• Ability to work independently and with others across programs

• Organized and able to handle multiple programs and priorities
