A Celebration of Arts & Healing – 3rd Annual Arts Benefit

The evening will include a program on the role of art in healing, a dinner catered by Saw-atdee, silent auction, raffle, & entertainment by guest artists Michael Dennis Browne, an award winning poet & author, Reuben Correa, Celtic folk harpist, Larry McDonough, jazz pianist, Maureen McGough, ethnic dancer, & Gene Swan-son, classical guitarist. The program will highlight the artistic expressions of Family Institute participants, including a Native American dance by one of our youth. Proceeds will go to benefit arts & healing programs for children with disabilities or chronic illness such as cancer. Day/Time: Sat, 6 pm to 10 pm; Cost: $50. The conference draws about 1000 health & human service practitioners. It includes a wide variety of target audiences. Performance Art for Beginners

The workshop will include simple movement & performance techniques that can be combined with video, audio & text to create rich, layered performances. This intensive two-day workshop is for all levels of experience & open to ages 16 & over. Participants are encouraged to work with their own video clips, to create sound clips of their own, & also to write short original pieces to work with. “Found” materials will also be provided by the workshop leader. Emerging Issues & Trends – The Nuts & Bolts of Title I, II, & III

The Keynote speakers for this event are Robin Jones Director of the Great Lakes ADA & Accessible Information Technology Center & an Instructor in the Department of Disability & Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago & Gregory G. Brooker, U.S. Dept of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Assistant United States Attorney, District of MN. Title I - Basic knowledge of the ADA is assumed. This session will highlight employment’s emerging issues & trends as well as recent & pertinent Supreme Court decisions & how these decisions impact title I of the ADA. Titles II, III - Basic knowledge of the ADA is assumed. National Mentoring Day - Career Development for the 21st Century

Guest speaker is Jennifer Sheehy Keller. Ms. Keller is the President’s appointed Special Assistant for Employment to the Assistant Secretary of the Office of Special Education & Rehabilitation Services (OSERS) & Acting Deputy Commissioner of the Rehabilitation Services Administration in the US Department of Education.

Career Exploration will include the following career paths: Actuarial, Administration, Chemistry, Creative Services, Customer Service, Economics, Engineering, Facilities, Finance, General Science, Health Care, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal, Manufacturing, Marketing, Media, Operations, Public Administration, Public Policy, & Security Services. This year’s Conference theme reflects the fact that nonprofits must continually communicate compelling messages that engage their diverse stakeholders – including volunteers, board & staff members, donors, advocates, & voters – to be successful & effective. Featured speaker Joseph Grady, co-founder of Cultural Logic & research collaborator with FrameWorks Institute, will discuss framing versus spin & one of the critical distinctions between the two: good framing is about helping people see things they couldn’t see before.
