10 Years of Walking for Social
Change
On Sunday, Sept 18,
2005 over 1,100 people gathered at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis
to participate in the Headwaters Foundation for Justice’s
10th Annual Walk for Justice. The get together is the largest progressive
grassroots gathering in Minnesota. The walkers represented over
130 grassroots organizations committed to raising funds and awareness
about social justice and social change.
The Walk for Justice
opened with support from community leaders like State Representative
Neva Walker, State Senators Linda Berglin and Scott Dibble, City
Council member Natalie Johnson Lee, and Women Against Military
Madness’ (WAMM) Polly Mann among others. Walkers
began the three-mile walk by passing through an in-the-works justice
mural from Juxtaposition Arts and listening to the music of Drumheart.
Included in the Walk
for Justice were groups such as: Advocating Change Together (ACT),
Women Against Military Madness (WAMM), Welfare Rights Committee
(WRC), Minnesota Spoken Word Association, Local Fair Trade Network,
Got Voice? Got Power!, Witness for Peace, Women’s
Cancer Resource Center, and many others.
Even though the Walk
for Justice has ended you can still support groups and their causes
through October 14, 2005 by visiting www.walkforjustice.org and
