On October 15, 2005, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) - Minnesota will host its second annual Diabetes EXPO, held at the Minneapolis Convention Center, from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, showcasing the latest products and services for people with diabetes. This highly interactive event includes activities for people of all ages, including a fun Youth Zone with exciting activities, games, face painting, prizes and information for children with diabetes and their families. The Diabetes EXPO provides the public with a unique opportunity to talk with healthcare experts and obtain important medical and nutrition information.

More than 60 exhibitors, along with the EXPO sponsors, will feature the latest products, medications, information and services:

EXPO Retail Sponsor: Cub Pharmacy

World Sponsor: Prairie Island Indian Community

Media Sponsors: Pioneer Press and WCCO Radio

Free health screenings include A1C, blood pressure, BMI, bone density, cholesterol, and eye and foot checks. ADA World contains a bookstore, website demonstrations and information on advocacy, educational programs, and special events.

Keynote speakers will be Nicole Johnson Baker, Miss America 1999 and Pilot Douglas Cairns. Cairns completed the first Round-the-World flight, according to U.S. Safety regulations for a Type 1 Diabetic, in 159 days for Diabetes World Flight. He will talk about his flying experiences and adventures during his five-month epic journey around the world where he made 63 flights to 22 countries and raised $26,000.

Diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s ability to produce or respond properly to insulin, a hormone that allows sugar to enter the cells of the body and be used for energy. About 18.2 million Americans have the disease and in Minnesota, 281,000 people are estimated to have diabetes with 15,000 people being newly diagnosed each year.

Admission for the Saturday event is $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for seniors, and free to youth under age 18. Discount coupons are available on the ADA-Minnesota Web site www.diabetes.org/expo and in the Diabetes EXPO brochure.
