“Building Brighter
Futures for People with Developmental and Learning Disabilities”

Institute for People with Disabilities Network. Location: Crowne
Plaza Manhattan Hotel, 1605 Broadway, in New York City.
The five-day conference will feature more than 300 prominent speakers
from throughout the United States and abroad. More than 150 seminars
and workshops will focus on key issues, including:
Advocacy/Self-Advocacy, Aging and Dementia, Challenging Behaviors,
Clinical Issues, Day Services, Early Childhood, Employment Training
and Placement, Family Support Services, Health Care, Management,
Psycho-pharmacology for Non-Medical Staff, Recreation and Leisure,
Residential Services, Sexuality and Social Skills, Special Education,
Staff Training, Technology, Transitional Services, Workforce Issues.
A separate social work conference, focusing on research, practices
and new developments in the field, also will be held at the Crowne
Plaza from May 9-11, 2005.
A full-day post conference workshop focusing on critical issues
in developmental and learning disabilities will be held on Friday,
May 13, 2005.

The workshop is a two-part
event held on Tuesday, May 10: Guardianship / Conservatory & May
17: Health care living will, healthcare power of attorney, long-term
care issues, probate, revocable living trusts, supplemental needs
trust, and wills. Both Sessions run from 7 to 9 p.m.
The guest speakers are Daryll Stenberg, from Life Planning for Persons
with Disabilities, and attorney Robert Gunder-son. Families who attend

The Politics of Disability

This is the final conference in a series on disability intended
to bring together faculty and community representatives who share
an interest in disability issues for the purpose of furthering our
insights and potentially creating an agenda that will form the basis
for ongoing collaboration. This session will examine some of the
key factors that affect disability policy and the impact political
issues are likely to have on the future course for such policy.

2005 World Championship for
Athletes with a Disability
Hosted by: NDSA (National
Disability Sports Alliance). Location: Connecticut College in New
London, CT.
The 2005 Championship
will include the world’s top athletes
with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities, coming to compete
in the nine sports including Bowling, Cross Country, Cycling, Powerlifting,
Slalom, Soccer, Swimming, Table Tennis and Track & Field. About
1000 athletes from 40 countries are to be expected.
As a member of United States Olympic Committee, NDSA also hosts
the National Sports Festival, an annual athletic competition at Connecticut
College. They hosted 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

for individuals or organizations interested in making a difference
in the lives of athletes with physical disabilities. These packages

Dream Sculpture Workshop
Sponsored by: Artists with
Disabilities Alliance (AWDA). Location: Interact
Day/time: Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Cost: $6 for AWDA members and $10 for non-members. Limited seating
up to 15 people.
The workshop is presented by Tara Innmon. The main purpose is to
express deepest desires and fears by gaining knowledge about ourselves
from the creative unconscious.
Innmon has challenges of total blindness as well as fibromyalgia.
She will use her background in the healing arts to enhance her abilities
to help people using creativity in the process of living.
AWDA is a diverse community of individuals dedicated to the support,
mentorship, and promotion of artists with disabilities. Membership
is open to anyone with disability or to allies of people with disabilities.
Attendance at two or more meetings qualifies you for member rates
to workshops.
