Movement for Living SM

Sponsored by United Cerebral Palsy of Minnesota. Speakers: Louise Spierre, M.D., Director of Pediatric, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Miller Dwan Medical Center, Evey Kliever, M.A., R.N., Miller Dwan Rehabilitation Center. Location: St. Mary’s Medical Center, 2nd Floor - Auditorium, 407 E. 3rd Street, Duluth, MN. Day/Time: Saturday, Registration 12:30–1:00 pm, Seminar 1:00–3:00 pm. Cost: There is no cost to attend this seminar. Family and friends are welcome. If you or someone you care for has tight, stiff muscles related to cerebral palsy, you know that this condition(called severe spasticity) can make movement difficult or uncontrollable. It can make doing even the smallest things exhausting or impossible. Did you know that there is a therapy available that may help provide better movement and control?

Come learn about it at a seminar where a doctor will talk about severe spasticity and explain how the therapy works, you’ll be able to ask questions and meet others exploring their options for reaching their full potential.

People First Carver

Sponsored by People First Carver is affiliated with Arc Hennepin-Carver, which is teaming up with Magnifying Abilities to launch the new chapter. Location: Carver-Scott Educational Cooperative, Room 123, 401 East Fourth Street in Chaska. Day/Time: Thursday, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Cost: The meeting is free, and no registration is required.

Adults with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities who live in Carver County have a new opportunity to make friends and have fun while developing community-living skills. People First is an organization for adults with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities who want to become better at speaking for themselves and more active and independent in community life. Meetings are held once a month. Each meeting features a specific topic and a speaker, with an opportunity for discussion after the presentation.

People First is run by its members, so self-advocates who join the Carver County chapter will decide where and when they will meet and determine the topics they want to explore. The April meeting will also feature a presentation about self-advocacy and what it means. What to Do When the Work Day Ends

Sponsored by Arc’s Caregiver Connections. Location: Arc Hennepin-Carver, 4301 Highway 7, Suite 158, St. Louis Park. Time: Monday 2:00–4:00 p.m. Cost: $5 per person for Arc members and $10 per person for non-members.

For Parents and caregivers who oversee the care of an adult with mental retardation or related developmental disabilities. Put more fun in their family’s life with ideas from the Caregiver Connections: Long Term Vistas.
What to Do When the Work Day Ends” will explore the wide variety of recreation and leisure programs available in the metro area and how families can take advantage of these opportunities when an adult family member has a disability. The guest speaker will be Nicole White, therapeutic recreation specialist with the City of Eden Prairie Parks and Recreation Department.

Caregiver Connections: Long-Term Vistas is an information and support network for parents and caregivers of adults over age 21 with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities. It’s an opportunity to gain valuable information, discuss issues and make friends with others who share common concerns and experiences.

"Building Brighter Futures for People with Developmental and Learning Disabilities"

Sponsored by YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities Network. Location: Crowne Plaza Manhattan Hotel, 1605 Broadway, in New York City. The five-day conference will feature more than 300 prominent speakers from throughout the United States and abroad. More than 150 seminars and workshops will focus on key issues, including:

Advocacy/Self-Advocacy, Aging and Dementia, Challenging Behaviors, Clinical Issues, Day Services, Early Childhood, Employment Training and Placement, Family Support Services, Health Care, Management, Psycho-pharmacology for Non-Medical Staff, Recreation and Leisure, Residential Services, Sexuality and Social Skills, Special Education, Staff Training, Technology, Transitional Services, Workforce Issues. A separate social work conference, focusing on research, practices and new developments in the field, also will be held at the Crowne Plaza from May 9-11, 2005. Zippity Zoo Day at Como Park Zoo, St Paul. The day is for anyone who uses a communication device and their families or care-giver. All ages are encouraged to participate. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.; activates begin when the zoo opens at 10:00 a.m. Activities include touring the zoo, a talent show, face painting, riding the carousel, visiting the conservatory, designing a t-shirt, taking your own picture, and lunch.
