Life Is A Journey . . . Take
It!
by Karen Kolodziejczyk
Imagine taking in the
view from the top of Machu Picchu, canoeing down the Amazon River,
enjoying an African safari, cruising through the Panama Canal – and
leaving the worries of accessibility at home.
Let me help you discover what you can do and where you can go on
your next journey.
I started my home-based travel agency because I found there was a
need for a local travel agent who not only understood the travel needs
of people with disabilities but would also meet with them, one-on-one,
to discuss their needs. I specialize in cruises and tours and work
closely with cruise lines and tour companies who know and care about
accessibility.
Traveling can have its
challenges, whether you have a disability or are TAB. We’ve heard the frustrating stories first-hand and read
about them in the newspaper, magazines, as well as, lawsuit reviews.
An example that is, unfortunately, quite common – hotels advertising
wheelchair accessible rooms with roll-in showers, however, failing
to mention the steps to the hotels main entrance (that are not accessible).
Another common example are taxis’ claiming to be accessible – but
only for collapsible wheelchairs. All the planning in the world cannot
prevent some of the negatives from occurring, however, careful planning
will prevent the “preventable” from happening.
It is important to plan
ahead and to make sure communication is very clear and understood
by everyone involved in planning your journey. Keep in mind; “accessible” can have varied depths of definitions – depending
on whom you are talking with.
I love to travel and I feel strongly that anyone who has the desire
to travel should be given the opportunity to travel. Keep in mind,
the two most important essentials for a successful journey are: Careful
Planning and Accurate and Clear Communication.

it!
