In Access Press's August
issue, Tracy Reid-Selth and Kathy Hagen co-wrote an excellent article
on guardianship and your rights to vote. Changes are happening
so fast that Kathy asked me if she could have space to make some
corrections on the topic. If you are a guardian or the recipient
of this service, please read this second article very carefully,
and if any part of this article is not perfectly clear to you,
call Kathy for verification at the disability law center.
Lance Hegland turns in his final article on emergency preparedness.
Lance has come up with a nice list of resources. Thanks, Lance.
Jeni Mundl has an interesting
column on computer maintance. The cliché "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is
true concerning most things, but with computers it is an absolute.
Jeni takes you thru step by step how to run some of the basic utilities
to keep your computer working as it should.
With school starting throughout this month we have a couple articles
on the topic. Education for people with disability is far too important
to allow any of our rights or abilities to access education be taken
away. This form of exclusion is completely inexcusable. The only
way to ensure a good education for all people with any kind of disability
is to mandate full access to every educational opportunity available.
Former Georgia Senator Max Cleland was in town in August and was
invited to a picnic lunch with the Steering Committee for the Minnesota
Disability Community for Kerry/Edwards. About thirty folks had an
opportunity to get acquainted with Mr. Cleland who is a Vietnam veteran.
He was wounded in a grenade explosion April 8, 1968 and lost both
legs and right arm. We talked with him about the concerns of the
disability community in Minnesota. Max was very aware of our concerns
as they are similar to his own and to the rest of the country. He
stated that we need to get more organized behind our Candidates.
Mr. Cleland is a remarkable man and is a wonderful example of how
much a person with a disability can accomplish!
The center four page insert
this month is celebrating Remember with Dignity's 20th Anniversary.
This is a new project for us. It turned out looking very nice and
will be seen by 11,000 more people than what RWD originally planned.
In addition, we have printed hundreds more inserts for RWD to use.
This is something; I hope more organizations will consider doing
for their special occasions. It has been a win-win situation for
everyone. Call me and we can discuss your options and costs.
