UCPM’s Stationary Bike Race United Cerebral Palsy of Minnesota (UCPM) will partner with Now Bikes & Fitness and Kurt Manufacturing to present the 7th annual Great Minnesota Stationary Bike Race on March 15, 2003. The event will take place at the Merriam Park Recreation Center in St. Paul. The Race is held annually to benefit Minnesotans with cerebral palsy and similar disabilities. Teams consist of 10 riders; each team member pedals for 25 minutes at his/her own pace on stationary bikes. There is also a course for individuals who use wheelchairs or adapted bikes. (If ample notice is given, adapted bikes will be available courtesy of Freedom Concepts, Inc.) These individuals race for 25 minutes around the perimeter of the gym, where the distance has been premeasured in miles. UCPM is more than happy to try and facilitate any special needs (with advance notice) to include everyone who wishes to participate. During the event, food and beverages are provided by a variety of generous sponsors. Participants are also eligible for door prizes and other gifts. The Minnesota Timberwolves’ mascot, Crunch, will be making a special guest appearance at 11:00 a.m. The race begins at 9 a.m. and finishes at about 1:45 p.m. There is a small awards ceremony following the race. Prizes are awarded to the highest mile bikers in four categories. Other awards include the “Spirit” award, which goes to the team with the most enthusiasm, and the “Most Generous Team” award, which goes to the team raising the most money. UCPM is in the process of recruiting team captains and individual bikers who would like to participate in this event. Volunteers are also needed to help out the day of the race. If you or anyone you know might have an interest in any of these opportunities—or for additional information—please contact Abby at 651-646-8085 or via e-mail at ucpmn@cpinternet-com.
