The following performances will be Audio Described (AD) for people who are blind or have low vision, or interpreted in American Sign Language (ASL) for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

  • The Transposed Heads; ASL Fri., 2/7, 7:30; Ragamala Dance Theatre at Ted Mann Concert Hall, U of M; Mpls.; www.khazana.com/ragamala.  Uses the intricate language of Bharatanatyam gestures and ASL (Deaf actress Nicole Zapko) in the tale about a woman who loves one man’s intellect and another man’s body—and gets to have the intellectual’s head transposed onto the muscleman’s body.

Performers include Canae Weiss, the first deaf dancer to work with the American Ballet Theater.  The hearing actors will “listen” to the deaf dancer who will emphasize movement expression instead of speaking.  Workshops in January, also interpreted, will show the process of how artists create new work and will present scenes from the dance theater piece, incorporating participant responses into the rehearsal process (and providing participants with free tickets to the performances).  FMI:  Judith Brin Ingber; 952-920-1712; jbriningber@cs.com.

  • Mahalia, the Musical of Mahalia Jackson’s Life; ASL Fri., 2/28, 8:00; Paramount Theatre; St. Cloud; www.paramountarts.org; 320-259-5463.  Explores the life and work of gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, a grandchild of plantation slaves who rose to international fame.
